Use the race-specific generators below to find names that fit your build, backstory, and roleplaying style.
Name Generators by Race
Click any race below to generate names tailored to that race's naming conventions from D&D 5th Edition and Forgotten Realms lore.
- Elf Names – High elves and wood elves with melodic Elvish names. Popular for sorcerers, wizards, and rangers.
- Human Names – The most versatile race in BG3. Names range from medieval English to Calishite and Chondathan styles.
- Drow Names – Dark elf names with Underdark flair. Sharp consonants and apostrophes define the drow naming style.
- Tiefling Names – Infernal heritage names or "virtue names" like Karlach and Wyll use. Great for warlocks and sorcerers.
- Githyanki Names – Harsh, militant names from the Astral Plane. Lae'zel's people favor hard consonants and short syllables.
- Half-Elf Names – Blend human and elven naming styles. Half-elves can draw from either parent's culture.
- Dwarf Names – Strong clan names and rugged first names. Shield dwarves and gold dwarves each have distinct styles.
- Half-Orc Names – Guttural orcish names or human names depending on upbringing. Built for barbarians and fighters.
- Halfling Names – Warm, homey names with a Shire-like quality. Lightfoot and strongheart variants available.
- Dragonborn Names – Draconic clan names paired with personal names. Each name carries ancestral weight.
- Gnome Names – Playful, inventive names for deep gnomes and rock gnomes. Often surprisingly long and whimsical.
How BG3 Character Naming Works
When you create a custom character (your "Tav") in Baldur's Gate 3, you can type any name you want — there are no restrictions on length or characters. Your name appears in dialogue, journals, and when other characters address you. Origin characters like Shadowheart, Gale, and Astarion have fixed names, but custom Tavs get full freedom.
Tips for choosing a name that fits:
- Match your race — A drow named "Bob" breaks immersion. Use names that follow D&D naming conventions for your chosen race.
- Consider your class — A paladin named "Darkblade Shadowstrike" clashes with the righteous oath. Let your class inform the tone.
- Keep it pronounceable — NPCs won't say your name aloud, but you'll read it constantly. If you can't say it, simplify it.
- Check the companion names — Avoid names too similar to Shadowheart, Lae'zel, Wyll, Karlach, Astarion, or Gale to prevent confusion in dialogue.
Names by Class
Your class suggests a naming tone. Here are the 12 classes in BG3 and what name styles suit them:
- Barbarian — Short, forceful names. Think Wulf, Kord, Brenna.
- Bard — Musical, flowing names. Lyria, Cadence, Verse.
- Cleric — Reverent names. Aldric, Celeste, Theron.
- Druid — Nature-inspired names. Ashwood, Thorn, Willow.
- Fighter — Sturdy, traditional names. Gareth, Roland, Hilda.
- Monk — Contemplative, simple names. Kael, Seren, Jin.
- Paladin — Noble, oath-bound names. Elara, Varen, Cedric.
- Ranger — Wilderness names. Strider, Ashlyn, Fenris.
- Rogue — Sharp, quick names. Vex, Nyx, Cael, Shade.
- Sorcerer — Arcane, exotic names. Zephyra, Solaris, Myrren.
- Warlock — Dark, pact-flavored names. Mordecai, Ravenna, Grimshaw.
- Wizard — Scholarly names. Aldous, Elminster, Tasha.
Female Character Names in BG3
Female names in Baldur's Gate 3 follow D&D conventions for each race. Elven women carry names like Aelindra, Miriel, and Sylphina. Tiefling women often choose virtue names — Hope, Devotion, or Fury — or keep infernal names like Zariel or Ravina. Drow women tend to have longer, more elaborate names than drow men, reflecting the matriarchal society of the Underdark. Human women draw from whatever cultural region of Faerûn they come from: Illuskan, Calishite, Chondathan, or Turami.
Male Character Names in BG3
Male naming follows similar racial patterns. Elven men use names like Thalion, Caelric, and Erevain. Dwarven men favor hard sounds — Thorin, Durkag, Barendd. Githyanki men carry short, clipped names that sound almost militaristic: Voss, Kith'rak, Zar. Tiefling men might use infernal names (Morthos, Ekemon) or virtue names (Creed, Torment, Carrion). Half-orc men tend toward blunt, strong names: Grul, Thokk, Dench.
Naming Companions and Custom Characters
The origin companions in BG3 have names designed by Larian Studios to reflect their personalities:
- Shadowheart — A Sharran cleric whose name hints at her hidden faith and inner conflict
- Lae'zel — Githyanki warrior with a name that sounds alien and aggressive
- Astarion — An elegant, almost aristocratic name fitting a high elf vampire spawn
- Gale — Simple and approachable, matching the wizard's friendly personality
- Wyll — Short for William, grounding the "Blade of Frontiers" in human normalcy
- Karlach — Harsh and fiery, matching her tiefling barbarian nature
Use these as inspiration for how name tone matches character personality.
